OMBUDSMAN OF SPAIN

Ángel Gabilondo has been elected Ombudsman of Spain, while Teresa Jiménez-Becerril and Patricia Bárcena have been appointed First and Second Deputy of the Ombudsman, respectively. The appointments of both were approved on 30 November 2021 in the Joint Committee on Relations with the Ombudsman following their proposal by the Ombudsman.

Born in San Sebastián and father of two children, Ángel Gabilondo has had a long professional career. He is Professor of Metaphysics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), where he was Rector from 2002 to 2009. He also chaired the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) between 2007 and 2009.
He was Minister of Education between April 2009 and December 2011 and also served as a member of the Assembly of Madrid for two terms.

Teresa Jiménez-Becerril has been a member of Congress and served as a member of the European Parliament from 2004 until 2014. She presides over the Alberto Jiménez-Becerril´s Foundation.

Patricia Bárcena headed the office of the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) in the Basque Country.

José Manuel Sánchez Saudinós is the Secretary General. He is a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University Carlos III of Madrid and has been part of the institution since 2000.
