On passing the Constitution, Spanish citizens expressed their desire to establish justice, liberty and security and to promote the well-being of all by seeking to guarantee democratic coexistence within the Constitution and the laws, in accordance with a fair economic and social order.
Since the institution was founded, a continuos feature of the Defensor del Pueblo has been its Concern about and interest in the rights of children and adolescents, especially those who are in vulnerable situations.
Soledad Becerril Bustamante is the first woman elected Defensora del Pueblo, a designation which was approved by the full House and Senate on 17 and 18 July 2012, respectively. She took office on July 23rd.
