The Spanish Ombudsman as NHRI

The Spanish Ombudsman (Defensor del Pueblo) is the High Commissioner of the Cortes Generales, appointed by them to defend the rights set out in Title I of the Constitution (“On Fundamental Rights and Duties”), and for this purpose may oversee the activities of the public administration.

Since 2020, the Spanish Ombudsman has been Spain’s National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).
