Ángel Gabilondo: “Now is the time to launch plans and specific measures to promote comprehensive public healthcare”
04-07-2022
The Ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo, today presented the Plenum of the Congress of Deputies with the 2021 Annual Report, describing the main lines of action followed by the Ombudsman’s Office last year.
In 2021, the Ombudsman’s Office processed 29,401 cases, to include complaints, ex officio investigations and requests to lodge unconstitutionality appeals and others seeking constitutional protection. Furthermore, 2,231 resolutions were issued for the Administration, of which 513 were accepted, 185 were dismissed and 784 were left unanswered. The rest are under study or awaiting further information.
Ángel Gabilondo, who was present at the Congress of Deputies along with the Office’s two assistants, Teresa Jiménez-Becerril and Patricia Bárcena, pointed out that this report is a form of citizen disclosure and “involves taking a stance in favour of upholding fundamental rights enshrined in the Spanish Constitution, to ultimately promote human rights”.
In this regard, he referred to Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine and indicated that “we are facing a priority and huge humanitarian crisis, the impact of which must be handled as regards the human rights of millions of persons; we all need to work towards providing the necessary shelter and help”.
Ángel Gabilondo evidenced his concern for the more than four million people who have been forced to leave the Ukraine. “Many of these people have arrived in Spain, which means that we need to specifically ensure that they are welcome and offer them the chance to embark on a new life here, which is dignified and safe”, he assured.
The main activities are described in the 2021 Summary Annual Report.
