Inquiry by the Defensor del Pueblo owing to homophobic attacks in Madrid

05-13-2016

The Office of the Ombudsman has asked the Office of the Government Delegate in Madrid for information about what steps it is planning to take to prevent and eradicate homophobic attacks.

The Institution has launched an own-initiative inquiry after learning of the increase in reports of physical attacks on Lesbians, Gays, Transsexual and Bisexuals (LGTB) in the Community of Madrid.

The Office of the Ombudsman has expressed its concern over these cases and has pointed out the importance of prevention and early intervention to avoid these events, which might constitute hate crimes.

According to the association Arcópoli, 52 acts of violence were detected in 2016 against members of the LGTB community.
