The Ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo, has written to the Polish Ombudsman, Marcin Wiącek, to inquire about the situation of the journalist Pablo González, who has been imprisoned in Poland since February 2022.

The Spanish Ombudsman has requested the assistance of his Polish counterpart, on the basis of the existing relationship of cooperation between the two institutions, to try to obtain information about the situation of this Spanish citizen and whether his rights are being respected.

Some media have reported that, although he has been in prison since February 2022, it is not yet known when the trial will take place, and that the conditions of his detention and the treatment he is receiving in prison are causing him health problems, worsening both his physical and psychological state.

The case of this Spanish journalist, who has already written to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, has been denounced by various associations, trade unions and national and international journalists’ organisations, including Reporters Without Borders, the International and European Federation of Journalists, the Federation of Journalist Associations of Spain and the Spanish Association for Human Rights.

The Ombudsman, in addition to being the High Commissioner of the Spanish Parliament for the Defence of Constitutional Rights, is also the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).
