The Spanish Ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo, has deplored the loss of human lives in the tragic events that took place at the border perimeter of Melilla on Friday, 24th June.

Ángel Gabilondo explained in a statement that as soon as he became aware of the events, he contacted the Government Delegate in Melilla and the Director-General of the Civil Guards by telephone to inquire about what had happened and the state of the victims and the injured.

The Ombudsman asked about the state of the people who arrived in Spanish territory – how the protocols had been applied in the CETI (Temporary Stay Centre for Immigrants) of Melilla and what legal assistance had been provided – and also about the state of the members of the State Security Forces and Corps who had been injured.

On the other hand, the Ombudsman received a complaint signed by representatives of nine associations which has been admitted for processing and has given rise, on the part of the institution, to various actions and requests for information from the competent administrative bodies.
