07-08-2022

The Office of the Ombudsman has officially requested details from the Government of Castilla y León on the resources available in the region to prevent and fight fires.

Specifically, the Ombudsman has requested a general description of the fire-fighting personnel, the action guidelines for their mobilisation, and a statement of the criteria justifying the current fire prevention set-up.

In relation to the last fire that devastated over 24,000 hectares in the Sierra de la Culebra (Zamora) – according to local government sources –, the Ombudsman has requested the number and description of the surveillance troops that were deployed on that day, as well as the timeline of events leading to the fire being extinguished.

The Ombudsman’s office is also requesting information on the causes of the fire, an estimate of the economic and environmental damage caused, and a description of the measures to be adopted to repair the damage and reduce the risk of other fires occurring in the future.
