Spanish Ombudsmen ask the European Ombudsman to raise her voice before the EU in favour of the truce in Syria

10-04-2016

The Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, and the autonomous regional Ombudsmen have asked the European Ombudsman to join in the voices condemning the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Syria after the collapse of the truce, and raise the issue with European institutions.

“We feel that it would be good for yet another voice to be heard condemning the highly dramatic circumstances that the people affected are going through, and cry out for the truce to be maintained” Soledad Becerril indicated in a letter to her European counterpart, Emily O’Reilly.

The initiative aims to “unite the voices of all defenders of Human Rights with the voice of the people working and striving to look after the people in towns and cities in Syria who are suffering the terrible consequences of the war”.

The letter, which is signed by the Ombudsman on behalf of all the Autonomous Regional Ombudsmen, asks O’Reilly to pass on her concern to the European Commissioner for Security, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and the European Council Commissioner for Human Rights.
