The humiliation of romany women by dutch fans is “prosecutable under our legal system”

The Defensor del Pueblo, Soledad Becerril, considers the humiliations inflicted on a Group of Romany women that were begging in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid to be “prosecutable under our legal system because they constitute an insidious manifestation of intolerance and discrimination based on race or social or national origin.”

The Defensor considers the behaviour of fans of the Dutch football team PSV Eindhoven to be “unacceptable and embarrassing,” and notes that “no democratic society can allow itself to abandon the defence of human dignity.”

For Soledad Becerril, “the degrading treatment constitutes a direct attack on the principles of liberty, respect of human dignity and the greater values that form the foundation of our country.”

In her opinion, one must always remember that these type of acts not only put the dignity of the individual at risk, but also that of the collective because they are direct violations of the principles of liberty, equality, dignity, democracy, and respect for human dignity and liberties. The Defensor has assured that “they are, definitely, a threat to our coexistence and social peace.”

The Defensor responds to these hateful and discriminatory incidents with the greatest force and calls for the attention due to the victims.
