01-15-2016

The Office of the Ombudsman of Spain is taking steps with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the Ombudsman of Colombia to try to resolve the situation of the young Spanish national who is in prison in Medellín (Colombia) with her four children.

The Spanish woman, whose state of health is precarious, was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for drug trafficking, served one year in prison and has to serve the rest under house arrest.

After becoming acquainted with the case through Fundación + 34, the Institution asked the Deputy Directorate General for Protection and Consular Assistance for information about the possibility of transferring the young woman so that she finishes serving her sentence in Spain and so that her children, aged between 11 and 5, can live with their maternal grandmother.

Ombudsman staff spoke to the mother of the young woman this week, to give her all the details of the steps taken.

Staff at the Office got in touch with the Ombudsman’s Colombian counterpart, whom they asked to assist the Spanish national and her children while the matter of their return to Spain is being resolved.
