The Ombudsman warns that an interim Government over a long period of time is “detrimental to the general public”

The Ombudsman of Spain (Defensora del Pueblo), Soledad Becerril, warned of the difficulties involved in there being an interim Government for a long-drawn-out period, a situation that is “detrimental to the interests of the general public”.

“The institution noted these difficulties”, the Ombudsman stated, after pointing out that -over the last few months- the central Government and the different ministerial departments have been telling the institution that “they cannot take proposals into consideration; that they cannot accept them because they are interim”.

As the Ombudsman explained, this situation “has meant that the institution has formulated fewer resolutions to the central state administration”.

She conveyed this to the newly elected President of the Lower House of Parliament, Ana Pastor, at a meeting held on 20 July to present her with the six-month report on the institution’s activities, a study on the asylum situation in Spain and the annual report of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) for 2015.

At the meeting, Soledad Becerril wished Ana Pastor “a very fruitful presidency”, because it is necessary for the “well-being of the Spanish people and the stability and proper functioning of the institutions”.
