Declaration by the institution on the migration crisis

Declaration by the institution on the migration crisis

08-28-2015

The Spanish Ombudsman has published the following declaration:

Spain should not remain silent in the face of the dramatic attempts by thousands of people to reach EU countries.
The German Chancellor and the President of the French Republic have said that joint action, with sufficient assistance for the people who have fled, is urgently called for. And Spain should join that initiative.

We know that the situation is very complicated because of the different requirements for applying for asylum or obtaining residence in the different countries, but the EU cannot look on impassively at the large, inhumane exodus.

If there are events that require urgent joint decisions to make it possible that humanitarian care be given to people, that EU member States act decisively with traffickers, and that EU-candidate countries are asked to take actions to diminish the need to flee, then we are witnessing such events.

The President of the European Commission would do very well to propose a distribution of the number of applicants for asylum to EU members and for the latter to reconsider their dissenting responses.
