Meeting with a representative of the Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture

09-26-2016

On 26 September, the Ombudsman (Defensora del Pueblo), Soledad Becerril, met with Mari Amos, head of European countries and the person with responsibility for Spain on the UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture (SPT).

The meeting centred on ways of improving coordination between the SPT and the Office of the Ombudsman, in its capacity as a National Preventive Mechanism against Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (NPM).

Mari Amos praised the recent NPM initiative to make video recordings of some of the centres it visits and post them on its web page.

The NPM is an independent body that periodically visits places where there are people deprived of their liberty with the aim of preventing torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

The NPM presents an annual activity report to the Spanish Parliament and to the SPT. In the first nine months of the current year, 80 visits have taken place.
