To avoid discrimination based on sexual orientation, Foreigner-national ID cards will not include the spouse’s name

08-27-2015

As requested by the Office of the Ombudsman, Foreigner-national iD cards will not include the name of the regrouping spouse, to avoid discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The Institution had received complaints from foreign nationals who were the spouses of Spanish citizens, who reported that they suffered discriminatory treatment because of the fact that their same sex partner’s name appeared on the back of their permanent residence card.
The Office of the Ombudsman asked the General Commission for Aliens and Borders to include only the Spanish ID number of the regrouping person on foreign-national ID cards, in order to eradicate all sexual orientation discrimination.

General Commission for Foreign Nationals has complied with the Institution’s request and given instructions for foreign-national ID cards to include only the foreign-national ID Number (NIE) or national ID card (DNI) number of the person with whom the holder of the card has a bond, through kinship, marriage or another sentimental relationship.
